Two kedgers are going to China for a good cause!

KEDGE students, Tim Defois and Yann Delbarre are going to cycle from Bordeaux to Suzhou.This15,000km effort is intended to help the NGO, Planète Urgence.

Hello to both of you.  Would you tell us about your project in a few words?

Our project is called En Roue Libre (freewheeling). We’re travelling from Bordeaux to Suzhou, China, entirely by bicycle - a distance of 14,000 km. It will take about 8 to 10 months, during which we’ll have to find food, sleep in a tent or with a local, cover an average distance of 70 km a day, and discover cultures that are as different from us as they are interesting. So, it’s a life experience that we have thought out, planned and organised for over a year now.  We’ve created and put in place communications, logistics, marketing/canvassing, and the administrative and technical aspects of the project to get to where it is today, and hopefully, to reach our goal of cycling 14,000 kilometres.

How are you going to finance this venture?

In order for us to succeed, we put a lot of effort in soliciting businesses, foundations, and associations in Bordeaux, France, and even from all over the world. We needed materials, funding, and information in order to be able to cross 14 countries. We also made an appeal for donations, mainly through crowdfunding campaign on Leetchi so our family, friends, acquaintances, and companies can help us directly. A second one will be launched after we leave and will have a different principle. Someone makes a donation and issues a challenge for us at the same time. In order to get the donation, we have to do the activity and film it, then post the video online. This will let us have a good time and stay well-connected to our followers.

How did your education at KEDGE help you in this project?

For myself as well as for Yann, KEDGE provided the skills to work as a team or alone. We've also learned to take initiative, and create our own projects, mainly through the associations we are respective members of (AOC and Team Trophée). We also learned how to understand and manage a project of scale, such as En Roue Libre, to manage our time, prioritise, to organise tasks and deadlines, to not forget anything, and to split the work fairly.

Any tips for kedgers who’d like to do what you are doing?

Go for it! These types of projects demand a lot of time, but they are also the most exciting kind that to undertake. The discovery, the adventure, the challenge …  these are what drives us to continue and are probably the things that what will push us to keep going and finish the trip. It’s a project that is as much a teacher as it is a unique experience, and we think that each person should do something like this before tackling professional life. It tells us a lot about ourselves and about the world around us.

Anything else to add? A message to pass along?

Please don’t hesitate to help us via our crowdfunding campaign on leetchi.  There’s no minimum donation, and every euro is welcome and will be a huge help along this long journey.
