Interview : Graduated in 1996, Ludivine has launched her own specialty communications agency

Ludivine Renault-De-Haas, a graduate from the KEDGE campus in Toulon in 1996, has launched a communications agency that specialises in "Artisans d'Art"

Hello Ludivine. To start off, tell us about your educational background. What training did you get before and at KEDGE?

I studied in Toulon after getting a DUT in Mechanical Engineering in Cachan, in the Paris region. (I chose mechanical engineering because I wanted to be an airline pilot, but I didn’t pass the ENAC entrance exam.) I decided to attend ESC in Toulon for its industrial programme and they accept a lot of people with a technical background. I didn’t want to go to an engineering school because I love foreign languages and I wanted to be able to practice them. I picked the "Industrial Marketing" option at ESC because it seemed to make the most sense based on my aspirations and my prior education in mechanical engineering.

Tell us what you did after you finished your studies. What positions have you had? What have you learned at those jobs?

After my end-of-year internship, I was hired on a fixed-term contract in service communications (organising exhibitions and communications support) for a kitchen manufacturer for professionals. The business was bought out at the end of my contract, so I went to work for a company that organises training. I met my husband there. He had the chance to work abroad, so I went with him. We haven’t lived in France for 19 years, but we’ve always lived in Europe. We’ve lived in Seville (Spain), where my three children were born, then in Brussels (Belgium), and now I travel between northern Italy, where my family lives, and Thonon-les-Bains, where I grew up and where I launched my start-up. I’m a passionate “mamapreneur” with an atypical career, which has made finding a job difficult based only on my CV. I’ve always looked for jobs that let me acquire new skills, and all the jobs I’ve had let me continually teach myself different skills, so I kept up to date with the latest trends. (I’ve done business, websites, communications, needs assessment, and other work).

What are you currently working on and what’s your current situation?

After yet another move (to Italy 7 years ago) and an unsatisfactory job search, I told myself that I had to create my own job because my objectives had changed. I decided to create my own company that promotes craftsmanship. This was not a random choice as I came from a family of jewellery designers and art lovers! I had already created www.creativideilaghi.it - an e-commerce website of creative and decorative objects, which helped my friends be something other than just "a housewife", "the wife of", or " the mother of". That experience allowed me to meet talented designers! But I soon realised that the business model, based on commissions, was not a sustainable one. In discussing this problem with members of my network, one of my contacts told me that he had changed his website through a subscription plan. It was an "epiphany"! I decided to take inspiration from this business model and supplement subscriptions by offering additional services to get started in the craft sector, the logical continuation of Creativi dei laghi, but targeted for the French market. The market is there easier to identify and it is also much easier to communicate (including via news, blogs ...) in your native language. So I started my communication agency (almost 2 years ago), specialised for artisans. I want to open the French artisan market, not only to the whole of France, but also internationally. My credo: promote handmade, unique, and original products at affordable prices. It's about making French know-how accessible to everyone.

What are your objectives for the future?

There have already been some changes between my initial project of La Manufacture des Métiers d'Art and my current one, :-)

I don’t even have time to create my own website. Right now my goal is to set up in France and to recruit someone to help me on the commercial side of things and in the creation of an Internet site. But I still lack funds. I hope I can do it sometime in 2019 because I would really like to allow my clients to market their products internationally.

How did your education at KEDGE Business School help you develop your project?

KEDGE let me study abroad, and so I opened myself to other cultures. I guess, it also taught me to find solutions. It's a difficult question because I graduated more than 20 years ago, and the internet didn’t exist when I finished my studies like it does today :-)

What advice would you give to graduates of KEDGE who would like to set up a business?

Don’t think that being an entrepreneur is easy. On the contrary, it gives you a lot of freedom, but you also have a lot of stress. You have to have a good level of self-confidence and, especially, not be afraid. A salaried job provides a more stable income.
