Maritime Transport in the 21st Century: challenges and development opportunities – the outlook of a French shipbuilder

TOPIC:

Philippe Louis-Dreyfus will look back on the success of Louis-Dreyfus Armateurs over the past 165 years. Firstly, he will discuss what steps it took to survive in this hyper-competitive and highly volatile sector of maritime transport-on-demand (diversification of supply, specialisation towards niche markets...). Secondly, he will look ahead by identifying the key factors of success for the maritime services of the future, such as: Are environmental challenges the key to survival for European shipowners? Do business ethics still make sense in the maritime sector?

SPEAKERS:

Philippe LOUIS-DREYFUS, President of the Supervisory Board PACEMAR (The holding company of LOUIS DREYFUS ARMATEURS):

In 1974, after gaining international shipping experience in Oslo and London, Philippe LOUIS-DREYFUS joined the Louis Dreyfus bank to create its maritime financing department, which he left in 1986. After several years in the banking sector, and after having been successively a member of the Executive Committee in charge of the Corporate Department of the Pallas France bank, then CEO of Crédit Naval, he returned to the Louis Dreyfus Group in 1996 to take over responsibility of its shipping subsidiary, LOUIS DREYFUS ARMATEURS (LDA). In October 2007, he took full control of the LDA Group with his family, and has served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board since July 2015.

Mr. Louis-Dreyfus served as Chairman of Armateurs de France (a position he held between 2002 and 2004) and Chairman of the European Community Shipowners Association (ECSA) between 2006 and 2009. He was also President of BIMCO from 2015 to 2017. In addition, he holds the positions of French Foreign Trade Advisor (CNCCEF), Director of the Institut Curie, and Director of Medef International - of which he is also Vice-Chairman.

Mr. Louis-Dreyfus has also been awarded several sports titles including, French Champion in the squash team category and National University Rugby Player.

Pierre Cariou, Professor at KEDGE Business School, and Franck Magarian, Vice-President for Procurement, Ports, & Terminals with CMA CGM,  will moderate this conference.
