A young Kedger behind the camera

Kedge alumna Florie Berrehar has directed a film on “school and the quest for happiness”. She has gone on the search for four educational projects, in four countries, and four life stories.

Florie Berrehar entered KEDGE’s Grand Ecole Programme in 2011. After graduating in 2015, she joined an advertising agency, but as she did not feel it was the right place for her, the young graduate did some soul-searching.

"I had to create a new life, starting from scratch. Who am? What do I like to do? How do I want to live my life?" she said.

Her first step was to buy a camera and start filming. The second was go to live in Spain and enrol in a school of philosophy. "It was like a miracle. I was quickly able to make a living with my camera. I started making commercials and thus created my career. At the same time, I attended philosophy classes and was learning Spanish. I was just in the right place at the right time,” said the young videographer happily.

One day, Florie came across the book "Escritos Anarquistas Sobre Educación" (“Anarchist Writings on Education"). “I devoured it. From the first page to the last, I nodded to myself saying, wow, that's exactly what I think."

This book led her to find out about the "Summerhill" school, which is a "free school" for children aged from 4 to 18 where classes are not compulsory and where the children decide on the rules - a school where children are free to choose what they want to learn, free to play or work, and a place where they can spend all their time asking themselves who they are, finding out what they like to do, and deciding how they want to live their lives.

She decided to make a documentary that would tell the stories of four different people who grew up attending four different alternative schools, in four different countries: Argentina, England, Spain, and France.

Florie has been working on her film “À la Poursuite de mes Rêves” (“In Pursuit of my Dreams”) for a year and a half. It seeks to answer the following questions:

  • What kind of adult does someone become when they leave a school like this?
  • Do they have a different definition of success?
  • A different view of work?
  • How does one integrate?

This film is totally independent and Florie, who is directing the film, has gradually surrounded herself with a team of volunteers to help her expand her project. They joined her in the adventure because they share her dream of being able to live in a world where everyone is free to decide for themselves the way in which they wish to live their lives from a very young age.

The team is now launching a crowdfunding campaign to fund completion of the film and is still looking for volunteer members to join to help organise the post-production and to help show the film internationally.
