Marseille Alumni Conference

Meeting of minds on emergency humanitarian logistics

Topic:

Over the past 40 years, faced with the crises that are sweeping the planet, the humanitarian responses have increased, particularly in terms of frequency.  Logistics are of crucial importance for the effectiveness of humanitarian actions, whether in regard to supporting aid programmes or organising the supply of the products needed to respond. In effect, it must be allowed with the least amount of delay and at the lowest cost, to deliver the equipment needed for assistance, while ensuring the quality of the products concerned. However, unlike trade forecasts, humanitarian needs are more difficult to estimate. This is why the management of supplies is a logistic specifically known as "last minute".

The speakers at this conference will discuss the emergency contexts, programmes, issues, professions, and actors in humanitarian logistics, as well as constraints to both the supply chain and implementation.

Speakers:

François CALAS :

François Calas has more than 30 years of experience in the field of international aid. He was the Head of emergency logistics at headquarters of Médecins Sans Frontières, where he was in charge of analysing material needs, planning, and coordinating logistical resources during the deployment of interventions. As a project coordinator, he also supervised numerous operations in crises areas, conflict situations, population displacements, epidemics, and natural disasters.

Alain GRALL:

For the past 3 years, Alain Grall has been working on supply issues, particularly in crisis situations, for the World Health Organization. He has successively held positions in transport coordination, and then on the entire supply chain at Médecins Sans Frontières. His various jobs have led him to intervene on complex responses, including humanitarian ones, in several "hot spots" around the world, particularly on the African continent, in Central Asia, and in the Middle East.
