Marseille Alumni Conference

Why do we Drink Wine

Topic:

Why do we drink wine?

Plunge into the depths of the research of Professor Fabrizio Bucella. In order to do so, we must go back in time, more precisely to the Neolithic period, or 5,500 years before the Phocaeans transformed Marseille into a viticulture region. Head to the Caucasus, where grapevine stocks and seeds were found at the bottom of a jar. It didn’t take any more than that to launch Bucella into passionate research, resulting in nine years of work, research, and conferences, around the subject of his new book “Why do we Drink Wine”.  He research is covered in a dozen chapters in covering a range of topics as various as archaeology, philosophy, and history. From the “Judgment of Paris” controversy (1976), where during a blind tasting competition, experts preferred the wines of California to the wines of Bordeaux (what a sacrilege!), to the genetic mutation that allowed our ancestors to break down ethanol, and not forgetting about the revelations of expert tests, as well as the influence of the brain on our judgment. Throughout his book, Bucella highlights the link between man and wine.
