Choosing your wine: Should you believe the critics?
For all of us consumers, this is often a lonely time: but what, and how, to choose when faced with kilometers of wine bottle shelves, gondola heads in cheeky formats, gaudy color schemes, and prices that are supposed to be "the most attractive"?...
To help us, over the last thirty years or so, the figure of the "Wine Critic" has emerged: the law-maker, the kingmaker, the referee who hands out the good points and the bad.
He makes and breaks vintages, estates and winemakers. He reigns supreme over consumer choice, especially on the North American continent. He is respected and feared by the entire profession. The "Spécial Foires aux Vins" issues record the biggest newsstand sales of the year in both the general and specialist press. Is this a sign of the influence of the "giver of notes"?
Theme:
Who is the wine critic? Are there "female versions"? What are her selection and scores based on? Evaluation grid? Subjective bias? Does the critic's personal taste "dictate" the buying decision? It has been said of some critics, such as the famous Robert Parker, that he goes so far as to "condition" the taste of the wine by influencing the winemaker who will seek the perfect note in the elaboration of his nectar?
